I admired the sleek design. This cool slot-loading optical disc drive on the side of my iMac. The other day listening to an audio book (disc 9 out of 10) and the disc doesn’t mount. OK I will eject it. Eject button does nothing. Disk utility doesn’t show a disc in the drive. AWESOME. can i push a secret eject button pin-hole thingy ma bobby? Nope .. Apple took that away. While trying to access the disc that the somewhat new and very expensive computer thinks isnt there, the computer starts making horrible drive noises and locks up. AWESOME. I restart it. What do you think happens? NOTHING!! it will not restart, never gets past that startup screen. Oh the joys of iMacs. I spend 15 minutes on my old reliable windows notebook from HP and find a few suggestions in the apple forums. For me (27″ iMac, os x 10.6) holding the eject key on my bluetooth mini apple keyboard while booting seemed to do the trick eventually. Disc out, but what to do? I hook up my ASUS netbook external USB cd/dvd burner and it reads the disc just fine and it seems faster than the internal one and didn’t make any horrible noise. Seems like another reason to get an SSD and ditch this old HD and CD in the iMac.
