Bah .. from back in my PC days I had some old FireWire 400 hard drives i am trying to use on this new iMac with its FireWire800 port. Isn’t it great how computers need some new fangled port that isn’t easily compatible with your old devices?
So — what to do? I searched and found some big clunky adapters that i didn’t find too visually appealing, and thought it would fall off the back of the iMac .. Sonnet FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter (FAD-824) and kept looking until i found these nice flat cables from LaCie .. LaCie FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 Flat Cable 130849 (Orange) now my old hard drives are happy.. and surprisingly they were CHEAP! will keep you posted if there was a reason! (the packaging for this one cable was a real nuisance to open, “well designed” but not “well designed to be opened”.) The cables are pretty cool too in that they make other versions for USB and Firewire and they are all different colors and FLAT.
